The Thrill of the Hunt: More Than Just Bagging a Bird with Kylie Loewer - Fort Thompson

The Thrill of the Hunt: More Than Just Bagging a Bird with Kylie Loewer

Here at Fort Thompson, you know we take turkey hunting seriously, and we know we’re not the only ones. Today, we’ve asked our good friend Kylie Loewer to sit down and talk about her turkey hunting experiences. She gets into her must-haves and how she started on the great sport of turkey hunting. She’s been hanging out with the Fort Thompson crew for a few months, and we love what she has to say about the ins and outs of turkey hunting.

Turkey hunting has been a sport I’ve grown to be passionate about in the last 12 years. Twelve years may not seem very long, but that’s over half of my lifetime. I harvested my first turkey at the young age of nine years old with the best hunting partner a little girl could dream of by my side -- my dad. Hearing the gobble of my first turkey got me hooked, and I knew from that moment on turkey hunting would quickly become a passion of mine. Since that day, I have watched, learned, observed, and practiced ways to improve my skills and further my turkey hunting knowledge.

Throughout my years of hunting, I have tried many different products to better my game in the outdoors. One of my favorite products that I have used for years is a box call- I am not sure of the brand because it’s probably as old as I am. My dad gave me my call whenever he realized my passion for the outdoors was as strong as his. I have used call this for many, many hunts, and it has proven to be very successful. I have attempted over and over to learn how to use a diaphragm call, but until I master that, a box call will do!

Another product I have fallen in love with during turkey season and would highly recommend is a pair of Lite Boots. Nothing is worse than walking countless hours in boots that feel like bricks are attached to your feet. Turkey hunting requires miles and miles of walking up and down hills, in rocky creek beds, and through muddy fields, so it is essential to have comfortable and light shoes to support you through all the terrains.

The most important thing that I have learned about turkey hunting is that patience is key. Turkey hunting is full of disappointment, exhaustion, and mess-ups, but the end reward will always outweigh any of the lows that I have ever and will ever endure. This sport will always be so much more than simply harvesting a bird. To me, turkey hunting is a way to experience a great community, work on my patience, and recognize God’s wonderful creations. I will forever be thankful for this sport and the peace it brings me!
